Life

image Born in Vlaardingen (near Rotterdam, The Netherlands) in 1972, Magdeleen van Eersel moved to Zeeland at the age of 3. She grew up in Middelburg, a small, medieval town in the Southwest; at 18 she moved to Utrecht, to study General Linguistics and later English at the University of Utrecht.

In 1996 she started her degree of Fine Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts & Design in Den Bosch. In 1998 she transferred to the Academy St. Joost in Breda, from which she departed in 2000.

She has since taken part in several group shows and has had a number of solo-shows as well. She currently lives and works in Rotterdam

Work

Magdeleen's multi-faceted interests have led her to create works in various techniques, shapes and ways, but her work shows a slight preferment for the use of materials that are tactile and gentle to the touch, like cloth, and also she generally likes to work on a large scale. Installations, charcoal drawings, painted objects, wall-to-wall-paintings and soundscapes are all part of her palet. Her images are figurative, but hard to grasp, accessible enough at first but at the same time evasive.

"It's all to do with this dream I had when I was very young: there was this magical closet, and every time I opened the door it showed me different contents. The feeling of wonder and surprise it caused, and especially the magic is what I want to evoke in my work".

Next to her work as an artist, Magdeleen works as a vocalist.
Samples of her work as a vocalist can be found here.
