THE SIRENS OF SCHOKLAND: Soundscape, duration: 10m 37s: Schokland used to be an island in the Zuyderzee, now the sea is gone and the island is surrounded by polderland; what's left of the harbour looks out on a sea of agricultural land. For this sound-scape I went back in time to when Schokland was a real island, and collected the sounds that could (or at least should) have been heard back then: screeching seagulls, howling whales, sining fishermen and crooning mermaids...
It was played on location (on the jetty) during a group show organised by Stichting RUIM www.stichtingruim.nl in the old harbour of Schokland, and later that year during another group show in Hoek van Holland, during the Week of the Sea Festival.
