THE ANATOMY OF ANGELS (Work in Progress): This project consists of a series of lifesize images of people with physical deformities, embroidered in white yarn on a black background. The images are displayed inside a small, dark circus tent, lit with uv-light so that only the images are visible, not much else.
The project is inspired by the travelling side-shows of the past (they do not exist anymore in Europe since they were banned by Nazi Germany, their performers murdered or used for "scientific" research). This project wants to pay homage to the performers, as well as make a comment on today's narrow views on physical beauty.
Materials: white cotton, black cotton, black yarn, white yarn, metal frame, uv-lamps. Size tent: 4m tall, 4m diameter. Images vary in height between approximately 1.20m. (dwarf) and 2.50m. (giant).
